Guatemala, Antigua!

On the way to Antigua, some hold up with the cops... I have to say the driving here is pretty dangerous and its the first place people are properly staring at me as I pass.

long lines of traffic :) I'm sure some drivers don't like being overtaken and deliberately speed up or edge closer as you go past!

Then sadly I have to ride through Guatemala city... Turns out its a public holiday and everyone is trying to get out of town. its hot, loco and scooter drivers are the worst!

I snap and break the law! Law breaker!

finally arrived and stayed at a B&B with Peter, moved an Australian who moved here 20 years ago, married a local lass and now has two teenage lads, desperate to emigrate to Auz.

We went for a stroll up the hill with his dog. Peter tells me its dangerous esp in the big city, he watched a business man crossing the road be shot in the head for a mobile phone and as stats go, a chicken bus driver is shot almost every day...

Lots of security in Antigua, set between three volcanoes, you get the odd rumble from 'Fuego' - still active!

An ex tour guide, Peter takes me round the town and gives a whole history. Amazingly the Cathedral was rebuilt by locals sick of the corrupt government ineptitude.

MONK!

they love a figurine ere... Turns out the Easter parade is a 3 day spectacular, enormous floats of up to 3 tonnes in weight, all carried on the faithful shoulders!

old square with communal washing area, still get the odd indigenous women coming down from the villages and using them.

work still to be done on other big sites!

Mask from an exhibition of the parade

more floats parked up in more ruins

we ended up with a nice bottle of red and made it home just as the night was getting stared :)

good night my child, rest well
